Davy Kelly – A Little Insight Into My World

My wife Sarah loves to light a Yankee Candle (UK) every now and then. All I know is that they are fierce expensive but they last for a good while. When Sarah threw one out the other day I spotted it before it made it to the bin and saw that there was still about a half inch of wax left. Not being one to waste things I lit it up and put it in our bathroom to let it burn up the last of the wax.

A few hours later we were sitting on the couch downstairs and heard a loud pop, I thought nothing of it but a few minutes later I decided to go and see what it was. I went up to the bathroom and there was the Yankee Candle jar with a hole in the side of it and the flame spread right across the base of the jar (not just the wick light!).

What I believe had happened was that over time as the candle burned down from new small bits of the wick dropped off into the wax, as the candle burned down this sank to the bottom untill there was a layer of these small bits of burnt wick lying on the bottom. When the wax had just about ran out the many small bits acted as one large wick and the whole base of the jar went alight causing the glass to heat rapidly and shatter.

UPDATE: I have checked the base of the candle and there is no mention of not letting it burn to the end of the jar… see photo below.

UPDATE 2: My wife was not aware that it needed to be thrown out for safety she was just tidying up.

Hi Davy! I’m sorry for your experience, but I thank you for your blog post. You’ve illustrated two very important reasons why we have safety instructions on the bottom of our candles. As you mention, any debris left in the wax can ignite and therefore we advise “remove wick trimmings, matches, or other debris before lighting”. Additionally, when the flame gets close to the glass, it can become extremely hot and so we recommend, “discontinue use when 1/2″ of wax remains, as glass may shatter”. Safety is so important to us so thank you very much for allowing us to highlight our product instructions!

Hi Caroyln and thank you for your response.

I have since taken a look at the bottom of the jar and there is no mention of the instruction to “discontinue use when 1/2″ of wax remains, as glass may shatter” (see additional photo above). I am based in the UK, perhaps this makes a difference to what is written on the base of the jar??

Seeing that there is no instruction to leave the last bit of wax unburned I find the fact that the jar shattered quite disturbing!!

    Looking forward to your reply…

Hi Davy, I do have egg on my face as I was referencing the verbiage that is used on our domestically sold candles. In the UK, we follow EU guidelines which are the pictograms you photographed. We offer supplemental leaflets to everyone in the UK who sells our candles and in that we do include the message “Discontinue use when 15mm of wax remains, as glass may shatter.” I am sorry you didn’t receive one of these leaflets and am very, very grateful that you and your family were unhurt. Thank you again for allowing us to focus on product safety!

I have had two experiences of the glass shattering on Yankee products. The first was during the night after having our new candles lit, just prior to Christmas. We had the candles in the 200mm or so high glass holders, and they were alight for about an hour. We moved the two candles a couple of hours later so that we could clear the table, and left them on the worktop in the kitchen. The following morning we awoke to find one of them shattered with glass all over the worktop and floor………… Not good!
We needed another glass holder (remember it was Christmas!), so we bought another from a different shop. We used them a few times since, using the Yankee candles that come in a small glass holder. Today, 19th Jan, my wife has got home from work to find another holder has shattered. This time we have shards of glass all over our dining table and carpet. I am not pleased with this, especially since we haven’t even lit the candle for just over two weeks. Furthermore, we forgot to open the curtains in that room this morning, so it can’t be anything to do the sunlight.
I’m off to write a complaint. These Yankee holders seem to have some quality issues, and something needs to be looked into. We don’t have pets or babies around, but I’d hate to think of what could happen to others….
